Boston or Bust

2011 Boston Marathon
standing at the 24th mile marker
cheering on people from across the world who had come to run
cheering on Team Hoyt as they walked past
cheering on our military troops walking with their boots and packs
cheering on the young
cheering on the aged
cheering on people dressed as hamburgers and gorillas and Spider man
cheering for people in wheelchairs or with artificial legs
cheering for barefoot runners and bearded runners and bandit runners

a wonderful day to sit or stand on the sidelines
to clap and shout and smile
and to be proud of the human spirit

I was in Boston to visit my friend, Jocelyn. Generously, Joce organized several photoshoots for me in the area. We spent hours caching up with her friends and chasing their toddlers around with the camera.

One of my favorite sites in Boston is the Old Granary Burying Ground along the Freedom Trail. This is the cemetery where Paul Revere, John Hancock, Samuel Adams and many other influencers of early America are laid to rest. Next to Samuel Adam's headstone is the grave marker that memorializes the five civilian men killed in the 1770 Boston Massacre, as well as Christopher Snider (or Seider according to some records), the 12 year old boy shot days before the massacre. Snider was the first casualty in the American Revolution, our country's bloodbath battle for independence.

My first morning in Boston, I woke up with this jingle in my head:
"Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name, and they're always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see, our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows Your name."

That's when I knew that the one place I HAD to see while in Boston was Cheers!

What a privilege to have a few days in Boston-- a city deep in American history, rich in education, scenic and stacked with American culture! Thanks for the tour, Jocelyn!
